FIRST

Before we get started on Project #2, I need you to completed a Peer Review Evaluation form for Project #1. This is an online class, which means I do not get to see how you are interacting. With this form you will evaluate the performance of your teammates. The review you give your teammate will factor into their grade for Project #1 Peer Review. This will also determine who you will be paired with for Project #2 Peer Review group.

Peer Review Evaluation Form - download, fill out, upload to Canvas under participation assignments by Thursday 10/5.

NOW: PROJECT #2. Are you ready?

As I mentioned on Monday, you are going to form a research question in order to complete both Project #2 and Project #3.

First, what is a research question?

In the simplest terms, it is a question which inspires research. Because the focus of this class is Pop Culture, for Project #2, I want you to develop a question which ties in Pop Culture and the real world. Previous questions for this project have been:

  • How is Netflix changing how viewers consume the long-form medium of television?

  • How does bootleg and counterfeit labels effect the fashion industry?

  • Is the knowledge of “fake news” on Facebook changing how people choose to obtain their news?

  • How has Spotify changed how musicians and performers allow access to their music?

  • Why are consumers clamoring for analog products instead of digital (vinyl record players, Polaroid cameras, pen and paper planners, etc)?

  • What are the real world implications of the super-hero registry in Marvel's Civil War's Comic series?

  • Can a consumer trust beauty vloggers or are they using their access to sell product?

Notice that all of these are questions, not statements. Questions begin with the words: How? Why? What? I DO NOT want you to argue a position. You don't have a position on this issue yet, because you have not researched both sides of the question yet.

Also, notice these are not questions about whether something in Pop Culture is "good" or "bad", I DO NOT want to see any research questions asking, "Is Snapchat good for society?" or "Is violence in media good or bad?"

So where do you begin?

  1. What are the areas that you are curious about? What is your major? What are your hobbies? What are your interests? What is your Pop Culture weakness?

  2. Where do these things intersect? If you were drafting a Venn Diagram of all these things, where would they overlap?

  3. How does this area of interest interact with the world outside of Pop Culture?

  4. Make sure you are not starting off too broad. Be specific.

  5. Write down a list of key research terms you might use for this question

When you figure out your research question, you need do some TERTIARY RESEARCH. Tertiary research will NOT appear in your paper. Google your topic. Google your idea. Google your question. Read Wikipedia articles on your subject. Find out what other questions people have about this topic. Once you get an idea of the conversation happening in the area you want to focus, you should be better able to form a research question.

Once you have developed your research question, you must write a research proposal.

I have included here a Research Proposal Guide in order for you to write a thorough and professional research proposal. In your future endeavors as a student, you will be asked to write research proposals for the projects you will complete. This will not be the only research proposal you will write.

Your Research Proposal (or Short Assignment #1) is due on Tuesday Oct 10 at 11:59 pm.

If you are having a hard time figuring out where to start, I suggest booking a Brainstorming appointment video conference with me to figure out what you wish to write about.

But before that: You are required to complete the Library Module for using FSU's Research Databases. For Project #2, you are required to find and incorporate 10 Peer Reviewed Sources for your paper. Peer Reviewed Sources cannot just be Googled. You must learn how to operate the FSU databases to make sure the information you are using is the most accurate. No Fake News in this class.

You will see an assignment on Canvas set up by Lindsey Wharton at FSU library. Look for her "Library and Database Guide". It will walk you through using the FSU website, database, Boolean search terms and setting up a Ref Works account. You will follow the Guide and answer the questions before Friday 10/6 at 11:59 pm. You will be graded upon completion of this assignment.

Don't forget:

  • Before 11:59 pm on Thursday 10/5 - Complete the Peer Review Evaluation Form and upload it to Canvas.

  • Before 11:59 pm on FRIDAY 10/6 -Post your P1 reflection on your P1 Wix page (approx 200 words). What is one thing you learned about the writing process that you will carry over into Project #2? What will you remember to put into action regarding Peer Feedback for the next project? What is your plan for revision?

  • MANDATORY Twitter Assignment: (1) Follow 10 internet personalities (celebrities, politicians, bloggers, artists, musicians, etc). [DUE 11:59 pm WEDNESDAY 10/4] (2) On your Wix page, write 300-500 word (total) analysis on the personalities you selected. What is their brand? How do they use Twitter to express this brand and their personality? Is it authentic or fake? How can you tell? List the rhetorical devices they use. [DUE 11:59pm SUNDAY 10/8]
