Maybe I’m biased writing this right after I get back because all I can think about is how hot I am. I walked into my house and proclaimed, “I’m sweaty!” To which my husband replied, “Isn’t that the point?”

It was sunny and bright. A long stretch of my path has no shade, so it’s just hot pavement. I should have tried a path close to the river but the point of living in the suburbs is to not have to drive to do my fitness. The hot sun heated the remaining magnolia blooms, perfuming the air with their sticky sweet fragrance, like shaking a potpourri sachet in the Cracker Barrel gift shop. My intervals were fine. I did need to walk a little in my last interval, but no more than a minute two times. Still running 8/walking 3 x3. It wasn’t my abs that hurt today. It was my glutes. Which is strange because my lower body is usually strong. To make my kids laugh on the few times they would go running with me, I would tell them to “draw strength from your butt”. They called me gross and stopped running with me. I am sad to say I could not draw strength from my butt today.

I rushed it. Well, first, I didn’t even turn on my watch until I was already in my first pose. Either way, my session was only 15 minutes. I’d stalled as long as I could. Going running has a very specific time frame — before it’s too God-awful hot. Yoga can be done at any time. Which makes it easy to blow it off. I refused to blow it off today. I am on a streak! Core and Arms sequence. Wild Thing is a pose on the list but I don’t know how to make that transition yet. Also added Garland and Bound Ankle because my hips needed a flex.

I actually listened to myself today. My watch buzzed for my first running interval. 8 mins. And ahead of me is the incline of the first hill. My brain said: Go slow. And I listened. good for me because today my abs didn’t burn so bad that I needed to walk instead of run. Three intervals, no unscheduled walks. I’m not worried about speed anyway. I’m still building my base. In two months I can worry about getting faster. Right now, it’s getting to three miles without walking breaks. I also realized that I may not have fueled properly on Tuesday. We haven’t had air conditioning this week so only cold breakfasts — cold brew and cereal with a banana on Tuesday. Today, cappuccino and yogurt with blueberries. Bananas have previously made my stomach burn before running. I had forgotten that. So berries > bananas for me.
